Literature for the future
1) Boyo and Carla Grow Up- The sequel to the basic literacy textbook which sought to end the reign of Captain Cutteridge and the West Indian Readers. The book which in replacing a well-oiled masterpiece, created a generation of semi-literates and illiterates through its nonsensical style and uninspired artwork and formatting. In the sequel, the pre pubescent couple of Boyo and Carla tackle the modern issues facing teenagers in Trinidad. Carla becomes pregnant at age 14 for Sexy de Maxi Tout (a new character introduced in this edition who is a parallel of Dan is the Man in the Van) , forcing her to write and fail CXC with ah big-belly while Boyo loses his dream of slimming down and becoming the next Dwight York, falling in with ah gang from Lavantille and ending up in Golden Grove. A realistic and driving work which will soon be joined by another volume- Boyo and Carla: What Next?
2) Paradise Lost- A critical examination of the Patrick Manning megalomaniac who rose from being an incompetent leader to delusions of godliness , building an exclusionist West Indian Empire and the ironic twists of fate which led to his exodus from the palace and the debilitating stroke which assuredly is the hand of his God reaching out. Book also includes a postscript which traces the rise of his spiritual adviser to the post of High Priestess following the death of his other divine consultant , Mother Corn Husk. NOTE: the signed editions may have a squiggly or incoherent signature- the written equivalent of uuuuhhmmmmmmmm......wat happened?
3) Distraction and Noise- J. Warner’s self-help book which really is a treasure for it teaches the reader the secrets of becoming loved by the masses while transcending allegations of international criminality. Also a useful volume for learning the art of empty promising and the placating of temporary disturbances by a mighty flapping of the jaws....a must for every budding politician or lawyer.
4) Shot-Call - An anonymous yet shameful story of a business magnate who inherited an empire which included the KFC/Pepsico franchise, the largest automobile assembly plant in the Caribbean and a formidable reputation but managed to squander it all in an ill-starred attempt to create a playboy persona. The tales of unprofitable music studios , mad movie deals, and ugly limousines made from pieces of Toyota Crowns spiced with the addition of the dismal story of how he intended to become the banana republic equivalent of Henry Ford by producing an overpriced , impractical beach buggy in an era when the driving public was just discovering affordable, reliable used cars from Japan.
5) The Art and Science of Embezzlement- Co authored book by L. Duprey and H. Harrinarine: a practical manual which teaches the finer points of fleecing investors and creating ponzi schemes. Includes a humorous chapter on how to make an ass of oneself in front of commissions of enquiry and distracting the matters at hand .
6) Failure on All Fronts- W. Dookeran: My story of how I bungled the 1990 Coup situation, allowed Basdeo Pandy to f*** up the fiscal system during my tenure at the Central Bank and allowed the PP to drain the treasury ......three times a failure. A true record of shame.
